Founded in 1859, the Ogier wine company is located in the largest and oldest cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the village that was once chosen as a summer residence of the papacy during the 14th century. The Clos de L’Oratoire des Papes wine estate is among the finest properties in this world-famous appellation.
A unique feature in the heart of the vineyards gives the property its name: an oratory, a place of prayer. Erected in the 18th century and dedicated to Saint Marc, the patron saint of winegrowers, it is believed to help protect the vineyards from storms.
One prominent feature of the 50 acres planted for Clos de L’Oratoire des Papes is the carpet of stones ranging from the size of a fist to that of a cantaloupe. These rocks, left by Alpine glaciers, store the sun’s heat during the day and reflect it back to the underside of the vines in the early evening.
